You’ve probably heard of Marengo Cave, but have you explored these four other incredible caverns in Southern Indiana? Even during the hottest parts of summer, these caves stay in the low 50s, so they’re a great way to beat the heat!
Squire Boone Caverns
Squire Boone Caverns in Mauckport was discovered over 200 years ago by Daniel Boone and his brother Squire. Don’t miss the historic mill and the final resting place of Squire Boone right inside the caverns! Kids will love the pioneer village that features gemstone mining and goat feeding. There’s even ziplining for those wanting a more modern adventure!
Bluespring Caverns
At Bluespring Caverns in Bedford, you can explore America’s longest navigable underground river on a cave boat tour! You might encounter cave salamanders, rare cavefish, blind crayfish, or bats dangling from the ceilings as you travel along the river 400 feet underground. There are also kayak adventure tours and overnight expeditions for those wanting a bigger thrill. Above ground, you’ll find gemstone prospecting and the Karst Natural Area Trail.
Wyandotte Cave
Wyandotte Cave near Leavenworth is part of Harrison-Crawford State Forest and O’Bannon Woods State Park. Visitors can take cave tours on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Little Wyandotte, which is an easy 30 minute tour, is open to all ages. The Big Wyandotte Tour is a 2-hour, 1.5-mile headlamp/helmet trip through the deeper sections of Big Wyandotte Cave for visitors age 6 and older. It is also called the Monument Mountain Tour due to all the rare cave formations you’ll see.
Indiana Caverns
Indiana Caverns, located just outside Corydon, is Indiana’s longest cave. The daily 75-minute tour will take you on a boat ride on an underground river. Along the way, you’ll see Ice Age bones and fossils, beautiful cave formations, and a 40-foot underground waterfall.
For a more extreme adventure, try the 4-hour Deep Darkness Tour (ages 14 and up). Above ground, check out the Bat Chaser attraction which combines ziplining with a steel rail coaster, or The Plunge which drops participants on 50 foot plummet! Kids will love the pygmy goats at Pygmy Playground and gemstone mining at the Peccary Mining Sluice.
