History of Indiana's River Country

It's the River! From the farthest points east and west in the state of Indiana, southern Indiana's River Country is so named because of our geographical location on or near the Ohio River. Originally named the O-Y-O or Beautiful River by the Iroquois, the mighty Ohio has defined this region from the earliest settlers along our banks, the Mississippian Mound Builders in early 900 A.D.

Today, Indiana's River Country is rich with family fun, festivals, history, agritourism, outdoor recreation and shopping. Indiana's River Country combines the past with the present and preserves the best of both worlds.

Treat your family to delectable cuisine at famous restaurants and listen to stories of the people who settled Indiana's River County. Hurry to catch the train as the conductor calls, "All Aboard!" before it winds through woods. History

From castles and cabins to churches and chapels, George Rogers Clark and Squire Boone to Abraham Lincoln and William Henry Harrison, Indiana's River Country played a major role in the development of the nation and western frontier.
